Office of the Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias Job Title: Information Systems Technician I – Network Technician Division: Technical Services – Network Support Union: IFT Location: 501 S Second St, Springfield, IL – Sangamon County Salary: Starting at $4,748.00 monthly, commensurate with experience Overview: Under general direction, assists in the technical support and administrative work involving the installation, evaluation, and maintenance of physical and virtual configurations of hardware and software for large-scale networks. Provides setup, configuration and maintenance of both on-premises and cloud-based security solutions. Duties and Responsibilities: Assist in conduct troubleshooting and network optimization. Assist in the installation, testing, monitoring, and maintenance of networked equipment, including routers, switches, wireless controllers, and other hardware. Implement testing and assessment procedures on network equipment in accordance with industry standards; Assist in installing, maintaining, and configuring data communication systems across various layers, managing both wired and wireless networks. May assist in evaluating and recommending changes or upgrades to network architecture to support evolving organizational needs; Perform precision tasks such as fiber splicing and termination, ensuring minimal signal loss and adherence to safety standards at the direction of supervisory personnel; Monitor network performance regularly and assist in resolving issues related to network transmissions, bandwidth bottlenecks, and connectivity. Maintain accurate logs on equipment and comply with technical and security requirements; Assist in maintaining network security measures, ensuring that firewalls, antivirus software, and protection against spyware, malware, and adware are up to date and effective; Engage in ongoing professional development, including education, training, and certifications, to remain informed of the latest technologies and practices affecting network infrastructure, with a focus on the needs of the Illinois Secretary of State infrastructure support; May participate in the development of disaster recovery and business continuity plans for network infrastructure; Collaborate with vendors and service providers to ensure that services meet contractual obligations and performance benchmarks; Travels as necessary for work, education and meetings; Performs other duties as required or assigned. Specific Skills: Requires sufficient oral and written communication skills for effective engagement with colleagues and internal users/customers. Requires the use and understanding of appropriate methods, tools, applications, and processes. Requires the demonstration of a rational and organized approach to work. Requires sufficient digital skills for their role. Requires the ability to seek to identify learning and professional development opportunities. Requires awareness and adherence to organizational standards for security, privacy and ethics. Requires the ability to follow oral and/or written instructions and to carry out routine operations, once established, without further instructions. Requires working knowledge of systems design and implementation, including the way programs are written, compiled and tested, the methods of operating computers, and the manner in which data is transcribed into a form suitable for reading by computers. Requires working knowledge of the devices for capturing data and the means available for receiving and transmitting data from remote locations to a computer. Requires working knowledge of the principles and techniques of computer system documentation. Requires willingness to travel and possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license as required by individual positions within the class. Ability to lift/carry, push/pull 0 – 50 lbs. Education and Work Experience: Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of one year of college, with coursework in the computer science field OR 1.5 years of technical systems and programming experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
